  BOWLERS NEWS

Hi Folks,                                            Issue No. 6

Well here we are again at the end of the bowling season.  We hope you have enjoyed your bowling this year.

There has been a great deal going on since the last newsletter – here is an update.

Air Show

Despite the bad weather forecast and the unfortunate withdrawal of the Red Arrows Display Team just a week before, the Club did very well.  £1,494 was raised over the two days from the sale of refreshments, the successful tombola stall and the sale of bric-a-brac items.  Members worked hard in the kitchen etc. and many thanks to everyone, however small their contribution.

Visit to Romford Dogs

This was on 27th August when a full coach left the Club at 5.30pm for a night’s dog racing, what a lovely evening which included a meal in basket, two free drinks, some people won but nobody lost their shirt thank goodness.

Ladies THL Finals Day

I have enjoyed my year as the Ladies THL President.  The Club hosted the Finals Day and I am pleased to say we had a record attendance of over 100 people from every Club in the area. Gwen Thomson and Marilyn Crane won the THL Ladies Pairs and Pat Wernham was runner up in the Singles.  Even the weather couldn’t have been better.  A big thank you to Ann Newell, Doreen Grantham and Ann Devenish for all the work they put in to make it a day to remember. Gill Chinery.

Club Finals

The Club finals took place all day Saturday and Sunday and late Monday afternoon with many members attending to watch the very competitive play.  Refreshments were sold on both days – well done to those in the kitchen. The bacon rolls, sausage rolls and burgers were a hit – again next year? A slightly different format this year with the finalists being presented with their trophies at the end of each

session.  They will be presented with their individual prizes on Presentation Night.  Well done to all those who reached the finals. The results as follows:

MEN

Championship – Brian Hobbs bt Clive Seager

Handicap – Derek Rudrum bt Alan Dean

Pairs – Ken Schofield and Joe Crane bt Melvyn Blackshaw and Frank Bovingdon

Triples – Bob Clifford, Les Grantham and Peter Newell bt Don Glanville, Alan Dean and John Richards

2 Wood 5 Sets – Andy Nicolaou bt Derek Rudrum

Novices – Andy Wood bt Jim Fowler

Ladies

Championship – Marilyn Crane bt Betty Hall

Handicap – Marilyn Crane bt Sue Wilson

Pairs – Doreen Grantham and Jill Loach bt Marjorie Beare and Pat Wernham

Triples – Brenda Miller, Ann Newell and Hilary Caley bt Linda Daniel, Betty Hall and Pat Wernham

2 Woods – Joan Elmes bt Betty Evans

2 Wood 5 Sets – Marilyn Crane bt Pat Wernham

Novices – Linda Daniel bt Liz Thompson

MIXED

Singles – Peter Halliday bt Marilyn Crane

Pairs – Andy Nicolaou and Marilyn Crane bt Edna Clifford and Vic Graham

2 Wood 5 Sets – Brian Hobbs bt Victor Pratt

The competitions were organised by Brian Hobbs and Joan Elmes – Well done.

Mixed Pairs Day

Despite a bad weather forecast, it turned out to be a lovely sunny day.  This event was rescheduled due to lack of support earlier in the season.  This time there were over 20 pairs taking part.  The winners were Audrey Wood and Derek Rudrum; runners up were Paula and Brian Jacobs – well done to you all.

Eastern Counties Finals

David Mitchell-Gears is the President of the Eastern Counties this year.  The Finals were held on Saturday 17th September.  It was attended by finalists and their supporters from Huntingdon, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex to name a few.  Once again the Club

provided bacon rolls etc, a buffet lunch and evening meal.  Well done to Doreen Swan and her team in the Kitchen and those who manned the bar.

The greens were in a very good condition and congratulations go to the greens maintenance team for all their hard work.

Chair v Vice Chair - By choosing ends to double up on the score this turned into an entertaining game with the Chair winning overall – the winning rinks being Bob Clifford, Norman Bilsby and Derek Rudrum for the Chair and Betty Hall, Marjorie Beare and Edna Clifford for the Vice Chair.

Do not forget the Club also has a full programme of winter activities.

Bridge commences on Monday 3rd October at 1pm.

Carpet Bowls – We are looking for more members to participate in this.  You can play Sunday mornings (10am), Thursday evenings and every other Friday evenings (7pm).  The Club is in the local Carpet Bowls league so it is competitive.   Why not give it a try and attend one of the sessions commencing Sunday 9th October.

Darts – Graham Agland will be organising the darts this year. This Year it will be on a Tuesday afternoon at 2pm  commencing Tuesday 4th October.

Cribbage commences on Wednesday 12th October at 1pm.

Canasta commences on Thursday 6th October at 1pm.

The first Social evening is Friday 21st October at 7pm.

Update new members - up to the present time we have had 16 new men and 4 new lady bowling members join our Club this season.

We encouraged all the new members to come and have a roll-up and meet the committee this year.  The bacon rolls were well received by new and existing members alike.  Many new members have already integrated into club life and have started to put their names down for the friendly games.  Well done to all of you – see you again next season.

Volunteers - To keep the Club running smoothly volunteers are always needed. If you can spare a few hours there are a number of small jobs to help at the Club.  Many non-committee members do lots of jobs behind the scenes, so think about helping out next year.

Maintenance Team – Still more helpers are needed to keep the Club in good order, can you spare a few hours.  The greens maintenance team do a grand job throughout the year.  A lot of hard work is now being done preparing the greens for the winter – Well done to all the men involved.
